The more I chat with people the more I am convinced we really  need to shop more efficiently for  our food!

“How can we afford to stay healthy? I really don’t know what foods I should eat. What can we do? Is there a list of the healthiest foods? How can I afford to buy them?”

“These are all good concerns and questions. You really have been thinking about your dilemma. May I ask a question? ”

“Are you ready to change your shopping style?”

You can easily afford enough food to remain healthy if you plan. Look at it this way. Buying and preparing food is your part time job a FEW hours a week. You are the family procurement officer, the executive chef, family chef and nutritionist.

There are some very basic guidelines. It doesn’t matter whether you are a vegan or a omnivore, we all need protein, fats and carbohydrates at virtually every meal to keep your energy up so we will be healthier. You can afford the food. Some tips may help you.

But first, let me give you an overview before going into detail.

Protein is necessary to build and repair your cells, tissues, blood, enzymes and antioxidants. Proteins come from animal sources like beef, buffalo, venison, poultry, fish, eggs, milk and milk products and from plant sources like seeds, nuts, beans and grains.

Fats have had a bad reputation for the past 60 years, but are very necessary. Fat is necessary for cell walls, for manufacturing bile and Vitamin D and to transport fat soluble vitamins and minerals. Many doctors and nutritionists now use coconut oil, butter, nuts and seeds butter, olive oil, eggs and avocado.

The many vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes we need every day are found in the carbohydrates – vegetables, fruit and whole grains. Processed grains and sugar provide very limited nutrients but give you calories.

Remember any store is in business to provide you with the products you want. You want to buy, but you have to decide what to buy. You can not buy everything. You must decide whether it is a need or a want.

When you are tempted, look at your list!
